Project Overview
Imperial College London (ICL) is consistently ranked among the world’s top universities, and its laboratory facilities represent the cutting edge of scientific research infrastructure. MPM Plumbing & Mechanical Services delivered a specialist mechanical and plumbing installation for this laboratory fit-out at ICL’s South Kensington campus — one of the most technically demanding environments in which our engineers operate.
About This Project
Laboratory environments present unique and exacting demands for mechanical installation. Precise temperature and humidity control, specialist gas and water services, stringent contamination prevention requirements, and the need for absolute system reliability in a research environment all require a level of engineering precision that goes beyond standard commercial installation. MPM’s engineers are experienced in these environments and understand the technical and operational requirements that laboratory mechanical systems must meet.
MPM’s scope on the ICL laboratory fit-out included mechanical pipework for heating and cooling systems, domestic and laboratory water services, air handling unit connections, and associated drainage. All work was carried out in compliance with the project specification and in close coordination with the laboratory design team, ensuring that every mechanical system was correctly installed, tested, and verified before being handed over for scientific use.
Our successful delivery at ICL University demonstrates MPM’s capability in specialist, technically sensitive environments — where the consequences of a poorly installed or incorrectly commissioned mechanical system extend far beyond a building management inconvenience, and where our engineers’ expertise, precision, and professionalism are genuinely critical to the project’s success.
MPM's Scope of Works
- LTHW and CHWS distribution pipework to 27 fan coil units per floor (two floors)
- Hot and cold domestic water services installation
- Demineralised water circuit supplying sterile water to each laboratory bench
- Drainage installation across both laboratory floors
- BMS mechanical integration
- Installation using Xpress crimp system, Aquatherm pipe and Geberit fusion-weld technology
- Full pressure testing, commissioning and handover for scientific use
